Dr. Carter obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan.  She had a particular interest in Developmental Psychology and understanding how psychological processes adapt and change over the lifespan.  Upon graduation, she continued her educational pursuits at Michigan State University, obtaining her Masters of Arts and Doctorate of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology.  During this time she also taught undergraduate courses on Personality Development, Developmental Psychology, and Adolescent Development. She particularly enjoys working with children and adolescents (ages 10 and older) as well as adults.  Her areas of interest for clients of all ages are depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and body image concerns.  She is also equipped to assist clients who are struggling with their spiritual development or who are having spiritual conflicts.

Dr. Carter’s primary treatment approach is cognitive-behavioral but she also incorporates insight-oriented treatment strategies as necessary.  She may use role play, relaxation strategies, and other empirically-supported techniques to help clients with their problems.  She strongly believes in giving clients the knowledge and skills they need to maintain their well-being after treatment with her has ended. Therefore, she likes to engage her clients in treatment, teach them how to work through their problems, and listen to their feedback about the treatment process.

Dr. Carter also believes in the healing impact that spirituality can have on clients’ mental health.  She has a Master’s Degree in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship from Moody Bible Institute and is also a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors.  She is open to incorporating a client’s Christian beliefs into therapy.  She understands the importance of teaching clients how to use scripture, prayer, and other religious practices to improve their psychological well-being.  Dr. Carter has a particular interest in assisting spiritual leaders (e.g., pastors, ministers) with navigating challenges in their lives in an effort for them to become stronger leaders for their congregations.
